I was 16 when this happened and couldn't believe what we were seeing on the TV news. One of the worst things I have ever seen.
The people who stormed their car were like a pack of hyenas.
RIP David Howes and Derek Wood.

"act with more reasoning" - these people supported the IRA. I'd suggest they didn't have much reasoning to begin with.

An unnamed soldier of the Royal Scots said his eight-man patrol was nearby and saw the attack on the corporals' car, but were told not to intervene. Soldiers and police arrived on the scene three minutes after the corporals had been shot, and established that the dead men were military personnel. A British Army spokesman said the army did not respond immediately because they needed time to asses the situation and were wary of being ambushed by the IRA. The large funeral procession also prevented them getting to the scene quickly.[19]

PIRA had a torture ritual for captured British Soldiers..named 'the operation'.
It didn't happen often thankfully..the ones that were caught werent line

Back in the day if you served in the SIGNALS..REME..etc..you had a brain
Infantry were for likes of myself...not set in stone..but pretty much...so Signalman being attached to covert opps is natural assumption.
Infantrymen less subtle by nature..

A PTE in an Infantry Batallion never wore civvies or allowed out of the lines ..as for possession of a personal weapon....no chance..ever...
And none of my Battalion ever did either..as far as I'm aware..if they did..they were working for the head sheds ..
We lived in potakabins ffs.
On the borders ..even less

Someone I know was serving in Northern Ireland at the time this happened, he too was in the Signals and said only a week before he was given the same tour in a car around Belfast by a longer server.
He hadn't watched the doc last night, but will be worth hearing what he though of it and did it echo his recollections.

I served in Northern Ireland and used to pay the troops in Belfast and Londonderry. I used to travel around in a civvie car in normal clothes and always carried a 9mm pistol. As I was in civvies most of the time I was allowed to grow my hair. It wasn't just spooks who wore civvies.

Those posted to Northern Ireland! Every battalion posted over there would have some people looking as civvie as possible which included being allowed to grow hair a bit longer. Moustaches have always been allowed under Queen's Regs regardless. Jobs could have been very mundane like picking people or things up and dropping them off, carrying out route recces. All stuff where using green fleet or helicopter wasn't practical or feasible.

Cutting around the province in civvie clothes and unmarked Q cars was by no means unusual for squaddies throughout the troubles. You didn't have to be on some sneaky operation or attached to SF. In fact it was a fairly routine thing. You would also carry a personal weapon (or two) for protection.

One thing for sure in some ways they didn't die in vain. The images shocked Republicans as well.
The Priest who gave them last rites was involved in the peace process.
Crazy times. I remember in 97 I was working in Dublin. I had nothing as such to fear from the IRA but the opposite as Loyalist killing were increasing and they had said they would target foreign businessmen in Dublin.
